Letter: Senator’s plan to help doctors misses the mark

Friday, Dec. 13, 2002 | 5:02 a.m.

I recently read an article in the Sun by Cy Ryan, regarding a $5 to $10 surcharge to patients that Sen. Valerie Wiener, D-Las Vegas, is proposing to help the physicians cover rising medical malpractice insurance. Now isn't that nice. The working stiff, the retired and the unemployed must be overjoyed. We all earn from $0 (unemployed) to $15,000 to $100,000, while the doctors earn anywhere from $150,000 to untold millions. We live in $35,000 to $150,000 homes, while they live in $250,000 to untold million-dollar homes.

I have a better idea. Why don't the doctors, hospitals, etc., clean up their act and police their own professionals, thereby assuring the insurance companies and HMOs that medical costs will not be a burden on anyone.

Is the malpractice doctor any different than the auto driver who has many accidents and has to pay a bigger premium? Again, clean up your act. As for the doctors leaving Nevada, good -- let someone else pay for their mistakes. For that we will all live longer and stay healthier. As for the good Sen. Wiener, please look out for the majority of the taxpayers and constituents of Nevada, as they are the ones who voted you in to look out for "their" interests and some semblance of common sense.
