UNLV defensive backs coach won’t return

Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002 | 9:10 a.m.

Following back-to-back losing seasons, UNLV football coach John Robinson has decided to shake up his coaching staff.

Steve Leach, who coached defensive backs for the Rebels for the last three seasons and coached wide receivers in 1999, will not return for the 2003 season.

"We've decided to part ways," Robinson confirmed Wednesday without elaborating.

The news comes just one day after sophomore safety Jamaal Brimmer had earned Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year honors, the second straight year a Rebel defensive back has captured the award. Cornerback Kevin Thomas won the honor in 2001.

A name rumored as a possible replacement for Leach on Robinson's staff is that of former Arizona State head coach Bruce Snyder.

Snyder, who served as color analyst on UNLV football games this past season after spending 14 of the previous 15 years as a head coach at Arizona State and Cal, was an assistant under Robinson with the Los Angeles Rams in the 1980s.

"I think Bruce would be one of the guys I would consider," Robinson said. "I've talked to two or three guys and Bruce is one of them."

Attempts to reach Snyder on Wednesday were unsuccessful.
