Lawmakers work on property tax relief

Friday, Dec. 6, 2002 | 9:51 a.m.

CARSON CITY -- While most of the talk around the Legislature is about taxes, two Republican lawmakers are working on plans to protect Nevadans from losing their homes for failure to pay taxes in dire emergencies.

Sen. Ann O'Connell, R-Las Vegas, and Assembly Minority Leader Lynn Hettrick, R-Minden, are working on the issue. Voters last month approved a constitutional amendment to authorize the Legislature to create a system for a reduction in property taxes on a single-family home occupied by an owner who is hit with "a severe economic hardship."

Carson City Assessor Kit Weaver, who worked on the amendment, said it would be used in catastrophic illnesses or injuries. It would not be applied just because a person was out of work or homeless, Weaver said. O'Connell, a member of the Senate Taxation Committee, said she wants to allow tax payments to be delayed or paid in monthly installments in those cases. She doesn't want the tax totally forgiven, she said.

Clark County Assessor Mark Schofield said he supports the idea.
