Teachers’ union says salary ranking is wrong

Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002 | 9:54 a.m.

A survey of average teacher salaries nationwide mistakenly boosted Nevada's ranking from 24th to 12th, the state's teachers union said Wednesday.

The survey, released last month by the National Education Association, put Nevada 12th in the country with an average salary of $44,738. But that tally included retirement benefits and shouldn't have, said Ken Lange, executive director of the Nevada State Education Association, an affiliate of the nation's largest teachers' union.

When the retirement benefits are removed, average teacher salary is 10 percent -- nearly $5,000 -- below the national average of $44,499.

That puts Nevada 24th on the list, Lange said.

Clark County School District officials say low starting salaries -- $27,384 this year -- make it difficult to recruit new teachers.
