Resident fights new Wal-Mart grocery

Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002 | 9:53 a.m.

A proposal to add a grocery section to a North Las Vegas Wal-Mart is being held up because of a neighbor's concerns about increased traffic and the number of shopping carts around her neighborhood.

North Las Vegas resident Donna Sparks is appealing an Oct. 23 decision by the Planning Commission to approve the 80,942-square-foot expansion of the Wal-Mart at 1807 W. Craig Road, on the corner of Clayton Street and Craig. A public hearing before the council on Sparks' appeal is scheduled for Dec. 18. The council could vote on the appeal after the hearing.

Wal-Mart's lawyer, Jennifer Lazovich of Kummer Kaempfer Bonner & Renshaw said the increased traffic complaint is invalid because the area is already heavily commercial.

The Supercenter concept has run into previous opposition in the area as well, but ultimately prevailed. In 1999, the Clark County Commission passed an ordinance that banned such large combination grocery and department stores. But a judge later ruled that law was unconstitutional. Critics of the failed law called it a favor for unions who oppose Wal-Mart's stand against organized labor.
