Letter: We could be singing a much different tune
Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002 | 9:28 a.m.
That the Bush administration caters to the interests of the profit motive, at the expense of what we consider to make America great, should come as no surprise to many.
That his administration considers the Republican sweep of the mid-term elections as a mandate for their agenda should sound arrogant to most.
Please, we hope that this arrogance ("pride goeth before the fall"?) will give them just enough rope to get themselves into a heap of trouble.
The downside of it all is that they will take many Americans down with them.
Here is a timely lament sung to the tune of "America, The Beautiful." (Remember when we were considering it as possibly becoming our new national anthem?) After the latest move to relax restrictions on factory emissions, I thought this might be more appropriate:
Oh beautiful, for sulfur skies, For laden waves of grain. For barren mountain majesties, Above the polluted plain. America! America! Bush showed his face to thee! And crown thy good with smog and soot, From sea to diminishing sea!
