Banks’ 3s saved day
Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002 | 9:57 a.m.
First Half: UNLV 44-38
The Man: Senior point guard Marcus Banks scores 24 points for the Rebels, including six of seven 3-pointers. He also is credited with three steals.
Turning Point: Trailing 16-11 with 10:30 left in the half, UNLV goes on a 12-0 spurt that includes three consecutive 3-pointers by Banks.
Game within the game: Banks is a virtual one-man show for the Rebels, connecting on 9 of his 10 field goal attempts. The other four Rebel starters -- Dalron Johnson, Jermaine Lewis, Demetrius Hunter and J.K. Edwards -- combine for just 11 points on 4-of-16 shooting.
Second Half: UNLV 82-80
The Man: Banks scores five of UNLV's final seven points en route to a game-high 35 points, including a game-winning floater with four-tenths of a second remaining.
Turning Point: Trailing 80-78 with 43 seconds to go, Dalron Johnson ties the contest with a tip of a Banks' miss.
Game within the game: Despite off nights offensively by four starters, committing 21 turnovers and getting outrebounded (41-39), the Rebels find a way at the end to pull it out thanks to the offensive exploits of Banks.
