County OKs more monitoring of hazardous materials firms

Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002 | 9:23 a.m.

Several recommendations to boost oversight of businesses that manufacture, use or store hazardous materials were approved Tuesday by Clark County commissioners.

An eight-member task force -- assembled after a deadly explosion at a model rocket plant in October 2001 -- recommended the county align its business licensing, air quality and fire codes with the state's hazardous materials regulations.

It also suggested all local governments work closely to avoid incompatible land uses, such as hazardous industries near residential areas, and require businesses to provide the county with a more detailed list of chemicals stored at facilities.

One employee at the AeroTech plant died in the initial fire at the plant. A second fire occurred when a barrel of magnesium, dampened by firefighters' efforts to douse a small blaze, exploded.

Members of the task force included representatives from air quality, business licensing, comprehensive planning, development services, the fire department and the GIS management department.
