Seniors to fight Kinship Care cuts

A Boulder City woman is rallying senior citizens who raise their grandchildren as foster children to fight against a $491-per-month cut in state funding.

Jane Horner, founder of the Grandparents As Parents group of Southern Nevada, will be holding a meeting Saturday to discuss the cuts. Horner, who raises two grandchildren, helped push the Kinship Care bill through the Legislature during its last session.

The bill went into effect Oct. 1.

Proposed cuts in the bill would lower the monthly payments from the state from $1,191 to $700 per month, Horner said.

The cuts will affect many seniors who rely on the money to raise their grandchildren. State funding to foster parents raising non-related children will not be cut, she said.

"We were doing OK until now," Horner said. "What do we do now -- go back to work?"

The meeting will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at 631 Northridge Drive in Boulder City. For more information on the meeting, call Horner at 293-0890.
