Comedy festival
The Las Vegas Comedy Festival Trade Show/Convention begins at 7 a.m. Thursday through Sept. 8 at the Wayne Newton Theater and the Avalon Ballroom at the Stardust; and the Fremont Street Experience. Tickets are $10. 736-6595.
Adventure Theatre
As part of the Adventure Theatre Series, "Closer Than Ever," a musical revue, will be staged at 8 p.m. Thursday in UNLV's Black Box Theatre. Performances continue through Sept. 9. Tickets are $25. 895-2787.

Shanta performs
Parents' Choice award-winner Shanta performs folktales and musical instruments from various world cultures at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sunrise Library, 5400 Harris Ave. Admission is free. 507-3710.
