McCarran sues over 9-11 losses

The Clark County Department of Aviation, which operates McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas and five other local airports, sued today to force Factory Mutual Insurance Co. to pay a $6.5 million claim for lost business resulting from the airports' closures in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The Federal Aviation Administration closed all airports nationwide in the immediate aftermath of the attacks. The Las Vegas airports remained closed until Sept. 13.

The Johnstone, R.I., insurer, in a Clark County District Court suit filed today, was accused of failing to pay the $6.5 million claim and of prematurely cancelling a $25 million three-year policy that was underwritten for the period from Oct. 1, 2000 through Oct. 1, 2003 allegedly without explanation after Clark County submitted timely claims for business losses.

Factory Mutual officials could not be reached for comment on Clark County's allegations.
