Group of lawmakers fighting gambling petition

Friday, Aug. 30, 2002 | 11:10 a.m.

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Fourteen state senators have signed a statement urging Nebraska voters to reject a constitutional amendment that would legalize video slot machines.

The statement says revenue from video slots will not lead to lower property taxes but instead will increase the overall tax burden on Nebraskans.

Conservative estimates are that the tax burden will increase by $3 for each dollar of revenue achieved from gambling, the statement drafted by Omaha Sen. Lowen Kruse said.

"We are already short on money in Nebraska," the statement said. "We cannot afford the increased tax load and social cost of video slot gambling."

The petition to place the video slots amendment on the Nov. 5 ballot is being challenged in court. If the court agrees it can be placed on the ballot, the Secretary of State's office has already said enough valid signatures were collected for it to appear.
