ST. LOUIS -- Over the objections of local residents, commissioners in Jefferson County, Mo., have approved a request to change the zoning of a site where Riviera Holdings Corp. has proposed building a $150 million casino, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.
Las Vegas-based Riviera owns the Riviera hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip as well as a casino in Black Hawk, Colo.
County commissioners already gave a preliminary stamp of approval to the Riviera project, which has yet to be approved by Missouri gambling regulators.
The commission voted to rezone nearly 260 acres near the unincorporated town of Sulphur Springs from residential to commercial, the Post-Dispatch said. More than half of the nearly 70 residents at A Tuesday hearing spoke against the casino plan.
