Walters’ attorneys have two weeks to file motions

Attorneys in the Billy Walters money-laundering case have until Sept. 10 to file motions asking that a 1998 indictment against their clients be dismissed.

Chief District Judge Mark Gibbons said he would hear arguments on the possible dismissal Sept. 24. If the charges are not dismissed, Walters and his co-defendants will be arraigned then.

In December 1996 authorities seized $3 million in cash in lockboxes that belonged to Walters and accused him and three associates of unlawfully transferring proceeds from a sports betting operation throughout the country and overseas.

The men were indicted on three separate occasions, but all three indictments were dismissed because of flaws. One of those indictments was unsealed earlier this month after the Nevada Supreme Court ordered it reinstated.

It is that indictment defense attorneys hope to get thrown out again next month.
