Rehearsals start for Boulder Chorus

Rehearsals for the Boulder City Community Chorus will start at 7 p.m. Thursday at the LDS chapel, 1550 Buchanan Blvd.

Las Vegas vocal coach Jeffrey Skouson will be the conductor for the Winter 2002 and Summer 2003 concerts. The chorus is open to all residents of Nevada.

Designated Drivers to help on holiday

All Las Vegans will have access to the services of Designated Drivers Inc. beginning 4 p.m. Friday and continuing through 6 p.m. Monday, compliments of Fasteners Inc. and Dewalt Tools, in association with KOMP 92.3-FM and KXPT 97.1-FM.

The service will ensure safe transportation for anyone too impaired to drive; they will be driven home free of charge in their vehicle.

The free service may be accessed by calling the 24-hour hotline at 456-STOP (7867).

Contest to name Metro's horse

Metro Police's Mounted Patrol Unit and is seeking the assistance of all Clark County elementary school students to help name a horse that was donated to the unit for the "Name Our New Horse Contest" that runs Sunday through Sept. 27.

All Clark County elementary school children can submit a name to their teacher. Each classroom will choose a name to be placed on a list. The principal will select three names from these lists to be submitted on the entry form representing their school and forward the entry form to the Mounted Patrol Unit no later than Sept. 30.

Students at the winning school will have the opportunity to meet the horse, and a demonstration will be presented by the Mounted Patrol and canine units in October.

Hike to a cool creek in Red Rock

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers hikes, walks and programs free of charge. Reservations are required. To make reservations or for more information on the upcoming programs, call 363-1922:

Lost Creek Hike: A short hike Thursday with Janis to a cool creek to learn about plant life that is so diverse in the area.

Junior Ranger Patrol: An on-going program from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday for children ages 6 and up to become a Junior Ranger. Earn your badge and certification while learning about the desert environment.

Reptile Watch: A reptile hunt with Ranger Jim on Friday.

Storytelling in The Canyon: Suggested for children ages 3-12. Join Vickie Saturday for an afternoon adventure in American Indian Folklore and a craft.

New schools' names are due

The Clark County School District's School Name Committee has set Sept. 5 as the next deadline to suggest a name for a school or district facility.

Members of the public who want to suggest a name must submit an application, and are urged to log onto www.ccsd.net and read CCSD policy 7223, which outlines the criteria for naming a school or district facility.

Elementary and middle schools are named for Clark County citizens who have made significant contributions to education or the community. High school names are suggested by a student advisory group and are typically names that represent the Southwest or the geographic location.

The Citizens Advisory Committee

The class "Rosh HaShanah
