Watchdog group tracking insurance prices

Monday, Aug. 26, 2002 | 11:02 a.m.

A New York organization is coordinating more than 60 consumer groups tracking insurance rates nationwide.

Americans for Insurance Reform doesn't have any Nevada watchdogs, but Bob Hunter, the founder of the organization, said he's looking for groups to monitor rates and policies in the Silver State.

Hunter said AIR hopes that consumer oversight will result in regulators investigating suspected unjust rate increases.

The organization supports insurance disclosure laws, strong state authority over rates and the participation of an effective insurance consumer advocate and the repeal of the insurance industry's anti-trust exemptions.

Hunter, the director of insurance for the Consumer Federation of America, said the group has called on regulators to freeze home insurance and medical malpractice coverage rates.
