Billboard rules not waived

Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002 | 9:22 a.m.

The waiving of new billboard restrictions was considered Wednesday, but the commission tabled nine applications for the signs.

Commissioner Yvonne Atkinson Gates warned applicants that she would not support waiving the rules, which passed earlier this year after months of contentious wrangling. That left only three other commissioners to potentially support the waivers -- Chairman Dario Herrera, Erin Kenny and Mary Kincaid-Chauncey.

Commissioners Bruce Woodbury, Chip Maxfield and Myrna Williams were not present when the items came up.

Under state law, approval of such waivers would require a majority of the full board, four of seven commissioners. Rather than face rejection, the billboard company representatives asked that their applications be put on hold until Sept. 4.
