Telecom operator cutting jobs

Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002 | 11:12 a.m.

ATLANTA -- Cingular Wireless plans to cut up to 3,000 of its 40,000 jobs nationwide, a cost-cutting measure designed to help the Atlanta company remain competitive in an increasingly crowded cellphone market.

The layoffs will take place across the United States and Puerto Rico. They are scheduled to start next month and end by mid-November.

The wireless carrier's sales department will undergo the first layoffs, and remaining salespeople will be grouped into business-to-business and retail sales operations. Job cuts in Cingular's marketing, network operations, finance and human resources departments will follow.
