Nevada sales tax down for second straight month

CARSON CITY -- Taxable sales, a key indicator of the health of the Nevada economy, fell in June, the second straight month of a decline compared to the previous year.

The state Department of Taxation reported today that taxable sales totaled $2.8 billion, down 1.7 percent from June 2001.

This was the fourth month in this calendar year that taxable sales have declined.

The agency said sales of building materials in June fell by 5.2 percent and miscellaneous retail dropped by 10.6 percent.

But sales of autos rose by 3.3 percent and the drinking and eating businesses increased by 1.7 percent.

Clark County merchants reported $2 billion in sales, down 0.3 percent. And Washoe County fell 3.1 percent to $469.3 million in taxable sales.

The department said building material sales in Clark County fell by 7.8 percent and miscellaneous retail dropped 8.5 percent.

But general merchandise stores in Clark County reported an 8.4 percent increase in sales; food stores were up 0.8 percent; auto sales rose 1.1 percent; apparel and accessory stores rose 2.7 percent; home furniture jumped 10.4 percent and restaurants and bars inched up 2.8 percent.
