Libraries will have longer weekends

Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002 | 8:59 a.m.

Starting Sept. 6, literary Las Vegans will have a few more hours on the weekends to peruse the latest best-sellers or favorite classics at Clark County libraries.

The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District recently announced its 12 urban branches will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Weekday hours will remain the same, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

The move comes as part of the Library District's five-year strategic plan to improve services, Patricia Marvel, spokeswoman for the district, said.

"It's not like we've been deluged with letters, but it's something the community wants," Marvel said. "People told us they want more hours on the weekends."

As Clark County libraries have adapted to the changing roles of libraries, demand has increased, Robb Morss, public services director for the Library District, said. Now the libraries offer more videos, Internet access and best-sellers, he said.

"We have concentrated on more of the materials people are interested in," Morss said.

Over the past fiscal year, the system has seen a 24 percent increase in circulation, he said.

For more information on the changes, call the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District at 734-READ or visit www.lvccld.org.
