Back-to-school events hosted in Henderson

An end-of-summer event hosted by the Henderson Parks and Recreation Department will be from 3:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Lorna J. Kesterson Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St., for youth in grades 4 and 5.

The event will celebrate the end of summer with music, dancing and refreshments. Youth will also be encouraged to take part in a variety of contests and have an opportunity to win prizes.

Another back-to-school blast will be held from noon until 3 p.m. Saturday at the Black Mountain Recreation Center, 599 Greenway Road. The all-ages event will get participants in the back-to-school mode with games, music, and a variety of hands-on activities.

Explore an old Red Rock home

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers hikes, walks and programs free of charge, reservations are required. To make reservations or for more information on the upcoming programs, call 363-1922:

Exploring Pine Creek: An easy three-mile hike Saturday. Explore the remains of an old homestead.

Moon Over Cathedral Rock: A program for ages 12 and up to hear moon lore by moonlight. Wednesday, join Jack atop Kyle Canyon's most accessible monument.

Tortoise Talks: Learn some facts about the desert tortoise at Red Rock during the program Thursday.

The program Hike Leaders Choice, a six-mile moderate hike, will be offered Friday for ages 12 and up.

The seventh annual Nevada Broadcasters Association

Hall of Fame dinner dance will be held 6 p.m. Saturday at Green Valley Ranch Station to honor the memory of the six broadcast engineers who lost their lives on Sept. 11 at the World Trade Center. Four hundred broadcasters are expected to attend. For more information, call Bob Fisher at 794-4994.

Consumers for the Protection of the People
