City Council, planners to consider vision of city

Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002 | 9:44 a.m.

The North Las Vegas City Council and the Planning Commission are meeting in a special session tonight to review comprehensive planning for the growing city.

The joint meeting will give Mayor Michael Montandon, the council and planning commission members a chance to talk at length about their vision for North Las Vegas.

This will be the second such meeting, said Brenda Johnson, assistant to the city manager. The first was last November, and the two boards plan to continue meeting jointly twice a year.

"It's an ongoing discussion between the county and the commission for a continued vision of the city," Johnson said.

The discussion tonight beginning at 6 in the City Hall council room includes whether lots smaller than 4,500 square feet should be permitted by the comprehensive plan.

The council and the commission are also considering whether a medium-low density land use category should be created. How large or small the category would be is open for discussion.

Planned urban development requirements may be changed after tonight's meeting.

City officials will also debate whether churches and schools should be allowed into areas considered Ranch Estates Preservation Areas.

At the last joint meeting the board discussed a proposed master-planned community on 1,900 federally owned acres in the city. American Nevada Corp. and Del Webb Corp., partnering as North Valley Enterprises, paid more than $46 million for the land to the Bureau of Land Management to create that community.
