Letter: Shame on Vegas for hosting event

Friday, Aug. 16, 2002 | 9:28 a.m.

Does anyone in your town know (or care) that six horses had to be destroyed due to injuries suffered at last month's chuckwagon races at the Calgary Stampede? Injuries included horses with broken backs, broken shoulders and broken legs. Not to mention the double-stabbing incident on the midway. And all in the name of "entertainment." God help us.

A truly civilized and humane city would not permit this debacle to go forward. If the races can't be canceled outright, they at least should be run on a straight-away, not an oval track.
