Back-to-school fair set Saturday

Las Vegas is hosting a back-to-school fair for children 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Sammy Davis Jr. Festival Plaza in Lorenzi Park, 3333 W. Washington Ave.

The first 2,000 children ages 6 to 16 will receive free backpacks filled with school supplies. Everyone will able to enjoy entertainment, a fashion show and food.

Candidates night planned at church

The Pastors and Ministers Conference and Nevada Concerned Citizens is hosting a candidates night 4 p.m. Sunday at Greater St. James Church, 316 Madison St., near Washington Avenue.

Candidates from the congressional and statewide races have been invited, as have candidates for the state Board of Education, Clark County School Board, courts and sheriff.

School supplies sought in drive

Central Christian Church, 1001 New Beginnings Drive, Henderson, will be the drop-off location for donations for the annual Make a Difference Drive, benefiting Henderson elementary schools and Central Christian Church's food pantry Saturday and Sunday.

Requested items include new backpacks and school supplies. Donations will be accepted from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday.

Lillie Langtry tribute scheduled

The Performing Arts Society of Nevada's National Globe Theater will present "The Life and Times of Lillie Langtry" at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Winchester Center Theater, 3130 S. McLeod Drive.

The one-woman music theater production is co-sponsored by the Clark County Parks and Community Services.

Special Olympics to get cops' tips

Special Olympics Nevada is holding a Tip-A-Cop fund-raiser today with law enforcement officers serving as celebrity waiters at two Sammy's Woodfired Pizza restaurants.

Customers are asked to give a special tip to the waiters to benefit Special Olympics.

The program was scheduled from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 3900 Paradise Road and 6500 W. Sahara Ave.

Heart Association honors officials

The American Heart Association recognized elected officials, media professionals and volunteers at a luncheon Thursday.

State Sen. Ray Rawson, R-Las Vegas, and former Sen. Mark James were honored for their efforts to pass a bill expanding the ability of county and city governments to pass clean indoor air regulations.

The association also awarded the C. Everett Koop Award for their efforts in raising awareness of heart disease and stroke. Channel 13 medical reporter Heather Angel and Las Vegas Sun reporter Emily Richmond were awarded first place recognition for coverage in their markets.

Southwest Gas Corp. was honored as Outstanding Corporate Partner of the Year.
