State Board of Education District 2
Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002 | 9:21 a.m.
Three seats are open on the 11-member State Board of Education, a nonpartisan panel responsible for setting standards and regulations governing Nevada's schools.
Incumbent Gary P. Waters will face newcomer Roger "Oz" Baum for the District 2 seat.
Waters, 52, has served two terms on the education board, and is a 10-year employee of the state's Division of Human Resources. His priorities include developing a leadership academy for education policy-makers, expanding student support services and improving campus safety.
Baum, 54, is a former stockbroker and the great-grandson of the late L. Frank Baum. He has published several children's books inspired by his great-grandfather's "Oz" series. His book tours have brought him in contact with thousands of parents and teachers, Baum said.
Baum said he supports the development of charter schools and trade schools so that parents and students will have more choices.
