Senate District 2

Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002 | 7:36 a.m.

Incumbent Democrat Maggie Carlton won't have a fight for her Senate District 2 until the November general election.

Carlton, 45, a waitress at Treasure Island, has no primary election opponent. A strong union supporter, Carlton wants to stay in office to focus on improving access to health care, raising education funding and dealing with workers compensation issues.

Augostin "Tino" Mendoza, 64, is a Republican running for District 2 for the fourth time.

Mendoza is an Army veteran with 24 years of military service, including tours in Korea and Vietnam. He is active in the local chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America and plans to focus his campaign on education quality and choice, enforcing truancy laws, health care, reducing auto registration fees and working toward a smaller government.
