Las Vegas, Henderson and North Las Vegas each have stiff competition in their respective races for constable.
The constable offices serve court papers and enforce court notices and evictions.
North Las Vegas
The North Las Vegas constable race mirrors the 1999 election, with Democrat Pat Little challenging incumbent Herb Brown in the primary and Republican Steven Bergstrom waiting in the wings to challenge the winner in the general election.
Brown was appointed to the office by the North Las Vegas City Council over Bergstrom in 1998 and subsequently defeated him in the next election. Bergstrom filed and won an ethics complaint against Brown for distributing a flyer that said Brown was the only qualified candidate with peace officer experience and training for the post. The state Ethics Commission ordered Brown to pay a $10,000 fine.
A North Las Vegas police officer for 22 years, Brown has also served as a U.S. Marshal.
As constable, Brown said he has initiated an open-door policy for visitors, fostered a better relationship with the North Las Vegas Justice Court and developed same-day service in issuing documents.
Little, a former North Las Vegas councilwoman, did not respond to requests for information.
Bergstrom worked as a police officer in Santa Rosa, Calif., in 1975 and is currently a registered representative with Washington Squares Securities. He said he is endorsed by North Las Vegas Mayor Michael Montandon. He plans on working to promote the services of the constable's office.
