Letter: Intensive English beats bilingual

Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002 | 8:45 a.m.

Regarding the Sun's Aug. 9 story, "Open bilingual positions prompt waiver request":

There's a very simple and effective way out of this problem. Follow the lead of California and Arizona. Dump bilingual education for the dinosaur it is and substitute one academic year of intensive English.

California has led the way by limiting bilingual education and substituting intensive English. Kids are responding and test scores are improving significantly in those schools which adhere to the terms and provisions of the law.

All the polls say that Colorado and Massachusetts residents will vote for referendums to dump traditional bilingual education and free our kids to progress by having command of the world's most popular second language -- English.

Yet our educrats and pandering politicians continue to wallow in the late Cretaceous mud and perpetuate obsolete, expensive and politically correct bilingual instruction. It's time for Nevadans to follow the leads of other states and end it by referendum.
