Elvis: The Concert’ coming to Aladdin

Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002 | 8:25 a.m.

Modern technology is managing to keep Elvis alive, or at least the spirit of his performances.

"Elvis: The Concert," the production that reunites former Elvis Presley bandmates live onstage with Elvis performing on video on a two-story screen, will be at the Aladdin Theatre for the Performing Arts on Aug. 24. The show begins at 8 p.m. Ticket prices range from $35 to $55.

A similar production debuted at the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis on Aug. 16, 1997, the 20th anniversary of the superstar's death. Because of its success, the show began an annual tour in 1998.

Joe Guercio, Elvis' original music director, directs the live performers as they sing and play some of Elvis' biggest hits, such as "Don't Be Cruel" and "Heartbreak Hotel."

Onstage are a 16-piece orchestra and a group of Elvis' original bandmates from the concert era of his career. Concert footage comes primarily from material shot for the MGM concert films "Elvis, That's The Way It Is" (1970), "Elvis on Tour" (1972) and from the 1973 global TV special "Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii, via Satellite."
