County Commission District F

Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002 | 8:58 a.m.

Stanhagen may be the only Republican running for District E, but the race for County Commission District F is dominated by his party. Republicans Tim Cory, Mark James and Devin Smith are competing to fill Commissioner Erin Kenny's open seat as Democrat Frank Boehnlein runs unopposed.

Cory, an attorney and U.S. Bankruptcy trustee for Southern Nevada, said he wants to open public access to commissioners by publishing his personal schedule of appointments, creating a public information hotline and holding mandatory hearings in neighborhoods when zoning changes are proposed. Scout master and volunteer with Muscular Dystrophy and Cystic Fibrosis associations, he also said he plans to review public projects monthly to prevent cost overruns.

Sen. James, also an attorney, served as chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary from 1993 to present. He said he plans to continue the work he has done on the Senate and in numerous community organizations to make "our streets and our neighborhoods safer and ensure a better quality of life for our children and families."

James said he supports increased police presence in the community, more funding and accountability in schools, and stricter zoning laws to make sure neighborhoods are buffered from casinos and commercial development.

Smith works as a facilities field supervisor for Las Vegas, and said his experience with construction gives him an understanding of the challenges of balancing growth and quality of life issues.

The 28-year resident also said he wants to increase communication commissioners have with constituents with regular town hall meetings every three years. Land use and balancing the budget are two other major concerns, Smith said.

Boehnlein, currently a tour and travel coordinator for Nevada Landing and Gold Strike in Jean, has held many jobs -- including assistant professor, electronics supervisor, restaurant manager and laboratory chemical technician. His biggest concerns are water resources and conservation, utility rates and the development of inner-city Las Vegas, Boehnlein said.
