County Assessor

Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002 | 9 a.m.

Only one Republican candidate seeks to unseat incumbent Mark W. Schofield from the office of Clark County assessor.

Republican Jonathan Galaviz, 25, proposes a property tax rebate and exemption program that will increase low-income property ownership, he said.

Galaviz, a business technology professional, also proposes exemptions for teachers, firefighters, police officers, entrepreneurs and small business owners. Both exemptions will be good only for the first year of ownership, he said. He is a graduate of New Mexico Military Institute and Charter Oak State College.

Incumbent Schofield was elected to office in 1994 after being appointed to fill the unexpired term of the assessor the previous year.

Since then he has been awarded the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO) Distinguished Jurisdiction Award. Schofield, 46, is currently chairman of the Nevada Assessors Association Legislative Committee. He attended Utah State University and UNLV.
