Chamber staying out of debate

Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002 | 11:21 a.m.

LOGANSPORT, La. -- Mayor Dennis Freeman demanded and received a commitment from the Logansport Chamber of Commerce that it would not take a stand or get involved in future gambling issues.

Freeman requested the vote Tuesday covering future gambling issues because he was concerned the organization could be asked by chamber President Joe Liles to support a move to rid the parish of video poker.

Liles, an outspoken opponent of gambling, made that suggestion during a meeting last week of pastors, lay people and business owners who have formed the group Concerned Christians of DeSoto Parish to oppose proposals for the Jena Band of Choctaw Indians to put a casino near the town.

Video poker revenue, said Freeman, provides the bulk of the town's budget, specifically paying for street overlay and contracted law enforcement services with the DeSoto sheriff's office.

Liles offered no comment after the chamber vote.
