Board of Regents District 5

One-time tennis coach turned educational consultant Aldo Aguirre will face off with a World War II combat pilot and seasoned politician Jack Schofield for University System regent, District 5.

The two candidates will run against Donald Edward Fondriasopolous. District 5 is between Nellis Boulevard and the Las Vegas Strip to the east and west and Cheyenne and Desert Inn to the north and south.

Aguirre, 42, is a native Floridian began his academic teaching career as tennis coach and later racked up experience as an adjunct instructor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, before going to work as an educational consultant for the state.

As a regent, Aguirre says his goals would be to bring fiscal responsibility to the board, increase the accessibility and affordability of higher education and develop a seamless transition for high school graduates entering universities and colleges in the state.

Schofield, 79, is running for his third state seat. He served was assemblyman from 1970-1974 and state senator from 1974 to 1978. He was a combat pilot in the Flying Tigers serving in China, Burma and India during World War II.

Schofield said his goal would be to continue to help the university and community college system by serving as a regent.

Fondriasopolous did not respond to requests for information.
