Board of Regents District 3

Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002 | 9:24 a.m.

Regent Thalia Dondero will take on longtime University of Nevada, Las Vegas administrator Paul Aizley in District 3 in hopes of winning a second term.

District 3 is bordered by Interstate 15 to the west and Pecos Road to the east and includes areas between Sahara Avenue to the southern tip of the city of Henderson.

Aizley, a 66-year-old former dean of UNLV's College of Extended Studies, wants to examine how the University and Community College System spends state dollars. He also questions whether the system is too top-heavy with administrators and wants to look at the widening gap between administrative and faculty salaries.

Aizley is former president for the Nevada Faculty Alliance, a faculty advocacy group, and he helped establish a continuing-education program for senior citizens to stay mentally active. He currently works as director of UNLV's summer term.

Dondero, 81, wants to increase the quality and diversity of professionals at each of the state's eight institutions as well as support the need to educate more teachers and nurses in Nevada.

Dondero is a former Clark County commissioner who has lived in Las Vegas for 59 years. During that time, she has chaired nine boards and has been appointed to at least 19 other boards or committees.
