Board of Regents District 12

Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002 | 9:25 a.m.

A police captain, a small-business owner and a leader in the Hispanic community are all competing for the newly created University System regents seat in District 12.

The district stretches from Desert Inn to the south to the northern edge of Clark County and is bordered by Pecos Road to the east and Buffalo Drive to the west.

The new seat was created because of population growth. Stavros Anthony, Jeff Knight and Andres Ramirez are all candidates.

Anthony, a 45-year-old police captain of the Metro Police Department, describes himself as a public servant with an "earnest desire to advance higher education." He believes that job cannot be done without regents securing adequate funds for higher education.

The 22-year veteran at Metro also teaches at UNLV and the community college.

Jeff Knight, 30, a small-business owner, is on the UNLV Alumni Association Las Vegas Host Lions boards.

Knight says his goal is to increase the quality and access of higher education.

Ramirez, 24, is an educational technology consultant and student. Ramirez is president of the Nevada Hispanic Democratic Caucus. He also co-chairs Latinos for Equal Representation.

Ramirez wants to develop a partnership between higher education and K-12, establish a credit union for university system employees and increase recruitment and retention of students attending universities and colleges.
