Assembly District 5

Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002 | 7:50 a.m.

Two Republicans and a Democrat want to represent this central Las Vegas district vacated by Barbara Cegavske.

Republicans David Griego and Valerie Weber are facing each other in the primary with John Ellerton, a Democrat, waiting for the winner in November.

Weber has 20 years of experience in nonprofit health care management and is now executive director of Associated Builders and Contractors. She advocates tort reform in medical malpractice and wants to change construction defect law to decrease the introduction of frivolous lawsuits. Weber also supports school choice and education accountability.

Griego, 41, a former chairman of the Las Vegas Planning Commission, serves on the board of United Way and Latin Chamber of Commerce and is a past board member of Clark County Public Education Foundation and past trustee for Sunrise Hospital and Nevada Partners.

He is focusing on state budget problems, wanting to find new sources of revenue without imposing more taxes; energy, wanting to stabilize energy supplies; and education, wanting accountability for education spending.

Ellerton, 53, is an oncologist who owns Cancer Consultants. His platform is focused on improving medical coverage for Nevada's working poor; options for long-term care and results in the medical malpractice crisis.
