Assembly District 41
Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002 | 7:46 a.m.
District 41 incumbent David Parks will face the winner of a primary between two Republicans and an Independent American Party candidate who, like Parks, goes unchallenged in the primary.
Republicans Phillip Dane and Anders Sorensen will square off in the primary.
Dane, 82, a seniors activist, says his life experience qualifies him for candidacy.
He opposes the National Teachers Association resolution calling for teachers in K-12 to observe October as "Gay/Lesbian History Month." He also supports the same sex marriage constitutional ban initiative.
Dane supports the voucher program that would give parents $5,000 toward sending their children to private schools.
Sorensen, a senior geographic information systems analyst.
He is running on a platform calling for increased spending on education and getting compensation from the federal government should Yucca Mountain eventually become the nation's nuclear waste repository.
Parks, 58, a consultant, was first elected to the Assembly in 1996 and has served three terms. He was the assistant majority whip in 1999-2000 and the assistant majority floor leader in 2001-02.
An Air Force veteran formerly stationed at Nellis Air Force Base, Parks supports education funding, a fair and equitable tax system, improved senior medical care and treatment and affordable housing and utility costs.
Parks was a former Paradise Town Advisory Board member and is a member of the Nevada State AIDS Task Force and Governor's Homeless Policy Team.
Saye, 53, a caregiver, is a columnist for the Las Vegas Tribune, a radio talk show host and a member of several community service organizations and clubs, including the Nevada Barrel Racing Association, of which she is a past president.
She vows to submit reasonable bills and stop "those bills that would usurp our rights, increase taxes or bring unnecessary responsibility for government or private business actions on my constituents."
She also said she would oppose federal government intervention into people's lives.
