Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002 | 8:08 a.m.

In what is shaping up to be one of the closest races of the primary season, Assemblywoman Vonne Chowning, will meet Moises Denis in the race for District 28.

Libertarian James Dan will go unchallenged to the November general election. There is no Republican candidate for this office.

Chowning, 59, a real estate agent and former high school foreign languages teacher, is a member of both the county and state Democratic Central Committees. She has served six terms since first being elected in 1989.

Her platform includes funding for teacher training and other education issues, improved transportation and consumer protection. She has sponsored and helped pass consumer protection laws including those dealing with automotive repair and real estate disclosures.

She also supports affordable prescriptions for seniors and fiscal responsibility of government.

Denis, 40, a computer technician, is a longtime local resident.

His platform includes securing a fair share of funding for District 28 and improving health care, including prenatal and injured worker programs, senior care and affordable medication.

Dan, 51, a computer consultant, has been involved with a number of organizations that assist youth, including Candlelighters for Children with Cancer, Boys and Girls Clubs of North Las Vegas and Child Haven.

His platform calls for better schools for children, lowering utility bills and keeping nuclear waste out of Nevada.
