Assembly District 15

Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002 | 7:22 a.m.

Two-term Assemblywoman Kathy McClain faces a Democratic primary, and if successful, must get past the winner of the GOP primary featuring former Lt. Gov. Lonnie Hammargren in District 15.

McClain, 58, is program manager for Clark County's Senior Advocate Program.

She pledges to remain an advocate for working families, senior citizens, women, veterans and children. Her platform includes more health care services for seniors, increased funding for public schools to at least the national per-pupil average and promoting neighborhood preservation.

Democrat Ronald Tanner Jr., 46, is a casino floor supervisor.

Tanner wants to reform the education system, promote pro-family initiatives and lower taxes.

Republican Lou Toomin, who turns 67 on Tuesday, is a retired owner of Monterey Pools in Las Vegas and former one-term Assemblyman.

Toomin is concerned about health care; reducing taxes and increasing teacher salaries; senior program needs; and job development.

Hammargren, a neurosurgeon, was lieutenant governor under Gov. Bob Miller. He ran unsuccessfully for governor in 1998, losing to Kenny Guinn in the GOP primary.

Hammargren is also former chairman of the Clark County Republican Party.
