Assembly District 14
Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002 | 8:09 a.m.
Democratic Assembly District 42 incumbent Harry Mortenson will face Brad Chastain in the Democratic primary.
From there, the winner faces a degree of uncertainty because lone Republican hopeful George "Yiorgo" Aretos says he has withdrawn from the race.
However, as of early this month, Aretos had not informed the Clark County registrar of voters office, which says it plans to place his name on the November ballot.
Mortenson, president of a nuclear and radiological consulting firm, has served six years in the Assembly. He also was chairman of the Spring Valley Town Advisory Board for four years.
Mortenson, 71, said his primary legislative objective is "preserving and enhancing the quality of life of Nevada's citizens." To that end, he opposes "regressive taxes" and will continue the fight to keep the nation's nuclear waste repository from coming to Yucca Mountain.
He chairs the Committee on High-Level Radioactive Waste and serves on several community arts boards.
Chastain, 44, an auditor with 25 years experience in accounting, also is running his campaign on a platform of opposition to the Yucca Mountain nuclear repository.
Aretos did not respond to a campaign questionnaire, saying he had withdrawn from the race.
