Assembly District 11

Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002 | 8:06 a.m.

Incumbent Douglas Bache faces two challengers in the Democratic primary.

Bache, 50, is a Clark County School District teacher with six sessions under his belt. He has chaired the Government Affairs Committee for the last four sessions.

Bache said he will continue to deal with the "balanced billing" problem his constituents have had. He plans to sponsor a bill to prohibit state workers from collecting both salaries and state pensions. Department of Motor Vehicles Director Richard Kirkland collects both because he was hired to lead the agency after retiring as Washoe County sheriff, which is covered under the state retirement system.

He said he looks forward to working on energy issues and restructuring the tax system.

George "Jorge" Cantu, 66, is site administrator of the Community College of Southern Nevada's Western High Tech Center. His campaign focuses on reconnecting government and political leaders to neighborhoods and average citizens.

Cantu said he will focus on crime, improving education and establishing affordable health care.

Bob McCleary, 41, is a parts manager for Findlay Toyota who said he is most concerned with protecting children.

McCleary is focused on paying teachers a living wage and providing teachers resources they need. He is also committed to targeting deadbeat parents.

The winner of the Democratic primary faces Republican David Adams in November. Adams did not respond to requests for information.
