Public picnic set for Democrats

The Paradise Democratic Club is sponsoring the Meet Your Democratic Candidate picnic at 11 a.m. Sunday at Paradise Park.

All Democratic candidates have been invited to attend, speak and set up a table to give out campaign material and meet the public.

Hot dogs, hamburgers and soft drinks will be served. Admission is free. Call 363-2456.

Pilates class on tap at Greenspun Center

Barbara Greenspun WomensCare Center of Excellence, 100 N. Green Valley Parkway, Suite No. 330, will offer an introduction to pilates class from noon to 1 p.m. Aug. 22.

Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on postural and alignment muscles, called "core strength" that can improve flexibility, help develop long, lean muscles, and, in some cases, improve osteoarthritis and scoliosis.

To register for the class, which has a $10 fee, call 616-4900.

Kids can attend tea party workshops

The Henderson Parks and Recreation Department will host two tea party workshops for children ages 4-8.

They are scheduled from noon until 2 p.m. Saturday at Silver Springs Recreation Center, 1951 Silver Springs Parkway, and noon until 2 p.m. Aug. 24 at Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, 1575 Galleria Drive.

In the first hour of the workshop, participants will put on aprons to prepare and sample tea party recipes, including tea sandwiches or desserts. Each workshop features a different recipe for participants to prepare.

The second half of the workshop focuses on proper tea party etiquette and the importance of good manners. Children will also dress up in gowns, necklaces, hats, boas and other accessories in preparation for the tea party.

Participation in either 2-hour workshop is $15. For more information, call 435-3814 or 450-5885.

'Salute to World' concert on Sunday

Cantor Renee Campos and Maestro Bernard Baskin, will conduct their "Salute to the World" concert at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road.

The pair will perform many songs and compositions from classical compositions to contemporary pieces. Admission is $18 and can be purchased through Ahavat Torah Synagogue.

Peace expressed through art, poetry

The contest "A Drop of Peace," which encourages children 5-10 to think about peace and express their thoughts and feelings creatively through poetry and art, will run through Aug. 20.

Entry is free.

The winning poem will be turned into a song and recorded by Grammy Award-winning songwriter Bunny Hull.

Winning artwork will be published in the International ChildArt Foundation's quarterly magazine. Official rules and entry forms can be downloaded at www.brassheartmusic.com.

The Las Vegas Chapter of Service Corps of Retired Executives
