High ozone levels strike Las Vegas

Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002 | 9:25 a.m.

Three air monitoring stations registered unhealthy levels of pollution from ozone on Monday, according to the Clark County Department of Air Quality Management.

The department issued a health advisory for active children and adults and people with respiratory diseases such as asthma, urging them to limit extensive outdoor activities.

The three unhealthy readings out of 22 monitors were all located on the western side of the Las Vegas Valley, said Femi Durosinmi of air quality management. They included West Alta Drive and Buffalo Avenue, West Gowan Road and Buffalo and Rainbow Boulevard and Ann Road.

Ozone is primarily caused by vehicle exhaust cooked by sunlight between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., Durosinmi said.

However, the National Weather Service tracked forest fire smoke from California drifting into Southern Nevada's skies.

The high temperature was 112 degrees about 4:30 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
