Letter: Clarifying the rules of the road

Monday, Aug. 12, 2002 | 8:53 a.m.

An Aug. 6 letter to the editor, from a driver who wants people to get out of his way when he wants to speed on the freeways, requires a response.

First of all, he states that the left lane is the "passing lane." Nowhere on the U.S. interstate system is there a designated "passing lane."

The left lane is, however, frequently designated as the lane for through-traffic. He also makes the point that the highway is public rather than private property -- absolutely correctly -- but that means that users are required to follow public regulations for its use, including speed limits.

Further, he states that it should be his privilege to decide whether to obey the laws, and that no one should prevent him from violating laws if he so desires. Should he be allowed to rob a casino or hijack a plane if he so desires, or does he think he has the right to decide which laws to disobey?

Personally, if I am driving in the left lane to avoid merging traffic, and I am traveling at or above the speed limit, I have no intention of moving over to allow a speeder to endanger lives because of his arrogance.
