MGM Grand casino fined for booze giveaway

Friday, Aug. 9, 2002 | 10:58 a.m.

DETROIT -- The MGM Grand Detroit casino has pleaded no contest and paid a $6,600 fine for giving away alcohol at parties for heavy gamblers, but it still could face more serious punishment.

The plea settles a 22-count complaint by the Michigan Liquor Control Commission. But the casino still faces an investigation by state gambling regulators.

"Were disturbed by these facts," said Nelson Westrin, executive director of the Michigan Gaming Control Board.

The board will promptly conclude its investigation, which could lead to larger fines and other discipline, Westrin told The Detroit News for a story today.

Investigators are trying to discover the degree of responsibility of MGM executives in Detroit and in Las Vegas, where owner MGM MIRAGE is based.
