Disaster exercise will need many victims

About 150 people are needed to volunteer as "victims " when Las Vegas, Clark County and the U.S. Department of Justice conduct a simulated disaster.

The city and the Clark County Local Emergency Planning Committee are planning to provide a realistic drill for training local emergency responders and hospitals on Sept. 19 at Cashman Field.

Those interested in volunteering should call Donna Kapteyn of Las Vegas Fire & Rescue at 229-0312. All participants will be required to attend a mandatory one-hour orientation class before the exercise. The date, time and location of the mandatory class will be given when callers register.

Benefit raises $12,000 for fire department

More than $12,000 was raised during the fourth annual Fire Fest at the Mount Charleston Hotel on Saturday. The festival was created to raise money for the Mount Charleston Volunteer Fire Department.

More than 2,000 people attended the event, which included a demonstration from Metro Police's K-9 unit, Clark County's children smoke house, fire fighter games and a 9/11 tribute to fallen firefighters.

The Las Vegas Fire Department, Mount Charleston Volunteer Fire Department, Indian Springs Volunteer Fire Department, Forest Service Fire Department, Cold Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Nellis Air Force Base Fire Department and Sandy Valley Volunteer Fire Department participated in the firefighter competition.

The Forest Service was given the first place trophy for the competition.
