Columnist Barb Henderson: It’s good to be outdoors

Friday, Aug. 9, 2002 | 9:04 a.m.

Barb Henderson is an outdoors enthusiast, freelance writer and producer/host of outdoors radio and television programming. Her column appears Friday in the Sun.

What a magnificent opportunity for me, to be able to write a weekly column for the Las Vegas Sun, sharing information and stories with the sportsmen/sportswomen who live in and visit our neck of the woods.

I've always had an appreciation for the solitude and serenity of the great outdoors. In fact, my hike along the career trail actually began as a child. I often reflect on those exciting summers spent at Girl Scout camp and going on camping and fishing expeditions during our family vacations.

Those lessons gave me the confidence to be persistent when facing obstacles that I might encounter on my professional trail.

In addition to my duties with the Sun, I am also an outdoor correspondent for the Henderson Home News and Boulder City News, an outdoor radio show host/producer for the "Outdoors with Barb," program heard on Saturday mornings at 6 on ESPN Radio 920, and produce/host "Clark County Outdoors,"on Community Channel 4.

Thanks to my husband's willingness to share his expertise, I've become an avid hunter, angler and all-around outdoors sportswoman.

I have hunted upland game birds and spent freezing mornings in hunting blinds, waiting for waterfowl to fly in.

I have hiked in mountains for deer and antelope and faced the dynamic challenges of steep hillsides and rugged mountain terrain in search of desert bighorn sheep.

I have fished waters in Canada and most of the western states, including Hawaii and Alaska. My most memorable times in the great outdoors would be fly fishing trips to Alaska. There's nothing that can compare to being in Alaska, fly fishing right next to enormous bears.

If you get excited by shooting a clay target; or sitting motionless in a duck blind on a brisk morning with your retriever dog by your side; or get an adrenaline high by catching a fish on a fly ...

Well, then we're gonna have a good ol' time.

On the agenda

Some of the topics I'll writing about every Friday include:

And I might even share a fish story about the one that got away.
