Reno fugitives nabbed in California

RENO, Nev. - A Washoe County inmate who escaped from jail nearly a week ago is back in custody.

Milton Plummer, 32, and his girlfriend, Jennifer McElroy, 26, were arrested Wednesday afternoon in San Leandro, Calif., Washoe County Sheriff Dennis Balaam said.

Balaam said the two were spotted by San Leandro police around 3 p.m. Wednesday in a stolen car. McElroy was arrested immediately, but Plummer took off running.

He was found hiding in a janitor's closet in a McDonald's restaurant about three hours later and arrested without incident, Balaam said.

Authorities said Plummer has family in San Leandro and was staying with a friend.

Plummer escaped from the Washoe County jail last Friday, the same day he and McElroy were to be sentenced on armed robbery convictions. McElroy had been free on bail.

Authorities say Plummer broke a window in his jail cell and used a bed sheet to climb from the second-story holding block.

From there he allegedly shimmied up a light pole, ran across a rooftop and made it out a vehicle gate.

Extradition to Nevada was pending, authorities said.
