Attorney general’s contributions challenged

SANTA FE -- The Republican candidate for attorney general says Democratic Attorney General Patricia Madrid should give back campaign contributions from the owner of Ruidoso Downs and Casino, who is applying for a second track in New Mexico.

Madrid's campaign manager said Monday she has no intention of returning the money from R.D. Hubbard and his business enterprises.

Rob Perry also asked the secretary of state to review Madrid's campaign funding. Secretary of State Rebecca Vigil-Giron said Monday she had not reviewed Perry's request and could not comment.

Perry said it's inappropriate for Madrid to accept money from someone who is awaiting a license the attorney general's office must approve.

"I think we're hard-pressed here to say we have an impartial, objective and neutral official," said Perry, who was state Corrections Department secretary under Gov. Gary Johnson.

Caroline Burkle, Madrid's campaign manager, said Hubbard has been a longtime Madrid supporter, adding Perry's allegations of a conflict of interest are baseless.
