Letter: Do the right thing on highway
Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002 | 8:55 a.m.
OK, class, welcome to Driver Ed 101.
Rule number 1: If you are traveling in the fast lane (also known as the passing lane) on the freeway and a car approaches from behind going at a faster rate of speed -- you should move to the right and let them pass.
The passing lane is "community" property, not your personal territory or turf, so there's no need to feel so protective about it.
The fact you would move over to let someone pass is not a sign that you got personally disrespected or that you backed down from some sort of confrontation, it's merely a courtesy when someone is going faster than you.
You do not decide what the appropriate speed is when traveling in the fast lane. If you're going 85 mph and someone is going faster, you should move over.
Always act as if that person has a good reason for their speeding. Emergency situations come to mind.
Maybe it's true there are no appropriate times to speed, but even then, let law enforcement do what they are trained and paid to do; you are not the sheriff.
Class dismissed.
